Use cases:

Use Case #1: Realizing decentralized, trustedlock-in free “Plug & Play vision”
Use Case #1 addresses on one hand mMTC via the vast number of smart meters and on the other hand uMTC as most VNFs require real-time control of the smart energy services. It is important to note that all proposed VNFs may be applied well beyond utility networks to any type of mobile hardware constrained terminal.

Use Case #2: Aerial Predictive Maintenance for utility infrastructures
Use Case #2 addresses xMBB communications via the vMPA VNF for video streaming from the drones and analysis to the xMEC and the utilities control centre, as well as uMTC communications via the vDFC VNF for controlling the flight of drones.

Use Case #3: Resilience and High availability via Dispatchable Demand Response (DDR)
Use Case #3 addresses mMTC communications via the huge number of RES, DES and controlling units, as well as uMTC communications as most VNFs require real-time control of the smart energy services.
Labs:

Lab #1: POPs SDN micro Datacentre
Lab#1 will host the NRG-5 development repository, automatic build and laboratory testing targeting NFVs and VNFs, along with software quality control. For that purpose, POPs will utilise Synelixis’ (the mother company) SDN/VNF micro Data Centre.

Lab #2: Rutgers/WinLab ORBIT Lab
Lab #2 is centred around the “radio grid emulator”, providing facilities for reproducible networking experiments with large numbers (up to 400) of wireless nodes.

Lab #3: UPMC FIT Lab
Lab #3 UPMC will offer to NRG-5 access to the FIT (Future Internet of Things) Lab. UPMC FIT Lab is part of the IoT-Lab offering a very large scale IoT.

Lab #4: RWTH 5G/Smart Grid Lab
Lab#4 will validate NRG-5 requirements and VNF framework under several different smart energy requirements.
Pilots:

Pilot #1: Natural Gas network/LNG Terminal (France)
Pilot #1 will be provided by ENGIE and target natural gas network and LNS terminals. Pilot#1 is aimed to provide a) Predictive Maintenance: aerial monitoring and incidents localization, by monitoring gas compressors and pumps from the selected monitoring centers.

Pilot #2: Optimized Energy Network Management and Control (Italy)
Pilot #2 will be implemented by ASM, the Terni municipal electricity and gas distribution network operator and EMOT in Terni and will validate all three NRG-5 use cases. Plug’n’play scenario of smart cross-network meters and optimized substation management.
